UTEP head football coach Sean Kugler told a packed crowd at the Larry K. Durham Center this afternoon that he wanted to achieve a certain standard with his 2016 football signing class. He was looking for players who were productive on film, displayed good versatility, and gave his team an upgrade in speed. Add in good character individuals and you have the Kugler formula for recruiting success at UTEP. These future Miners will not grade high in any recruiting service's final rankings. However, the team signed 24 prospective student athletes, including seven players from El Paso high schools. The last time UTEP had this many El Paso kids sign National Letters of Intent was 1999.

For the fourth year in a row, the Miners signed the Player of the Year in El Paso, Eastwood's Richie Rodriguez. In fact, 19 of the 24 signees come from the state of Texas. Kugler balanced his list to include 12 players on each side of the ball. He wanted hitters for his new 3-4 defensive scheme, and many of his 2016 defensive class are explosive, high-energy types that are not afraid to lay the wood to an opposing player.

On offense, the Miners added four new running backs and each one looks like they can star in the Sun Bowl backfield for years to come. He even signed a 5'6 multi-purpose athlete that runs a 10.3 100-yard dash and can return both kickoffs and punt returns. How many Miner fans would love to see another Howard Jackson running wild?

UTEP signed only one quarterback to the class of 2016, Eastwood star Mark Torrez. He will join a trio of signal callers that include former Andress Eagle Ryan Metz and Las Cruces Mayfield Trojan Kavika Johnson. New offensive coordinator Brent Pease will have a chance to work with them next month when Spring practice begins March 14th at Glory Field. A detailed look at every member of the UTEP 2016 signing class is listed below.
