Support Men’s Health & Wellness At 4th Annual Gents & Friends Event
El Pasoan and barbershop owner Alexis Aguirre is on a mission to bring awareness to Men’s health after losing one of her closest friends to testicular cancer back in 2020.
“His name was Armando Gutiérrez Jr, but we just called him Jr. He was diagnosed at the age of 17 years old with testicular cancer. He was like a big brother to me. Gave me my first barbering job,” said Aguirre.
Armando and other male colleagues of Aguirre were the main motivation behind why she wanted to create an event to bring awareness to men’s health and wellness. She wanted to end the negative stigma most men have towards focusing on their health even when they feel completely healthy.
“For them to be more active and open to preventative measures that can possibly save their lives and themselves along with their loved ones a lot of struggle and heartache.
This year’s Gents & Friends Men’s Health and Wellness event will be Aguirre’s 4th annual event.
Aguirre is the owner of Glory Road barbershop in west El Paso.
She is proud to bring back the event to not only promote her business which survived the struggles of the pandemic, but most importantly to hold this event that will give back to a local non-profit organization.
“This event is important for the community because we are the community. It’s our own people who get to have a resource like the Rio Grande Cancer Foundation because of events supported like this.”
All funds raised from this event will go back to the Rio Grande Cancer Foundation which is one of El Paso's largest foundations of its kind dedicated to meeting the needs of cancer patients and their supporters.
The 4th annual Gents & Friends Men’s Health and Wellness event will take place Sunday, July 10th in the parking lot of Glory Road Barbershop which is located at 140 Montecillo Blvd. Suite B-3.
The event will feature local artist exhibits, food trucks, games, contests, raffle items, and FREE beer courtesy of Deadbeach Brewery.
The event will also feature an obstacle course team challenge that will include a high knee tire run, beer pong, tire flip, push-ups or sit-ups, and a football throw through the tire.
Winners of this obstacle team challenge will have a chance at winning an El Paso Staycation package which includes tickets to an El Paso Chihuahuas game and more!
The obstacle course challenge is sponsored by Palo Verde Homes, Deadbeach Brewery, Aqua Addicts, Apollo Solar, and Desert Institute of Sports.
