Socorro Independent School District will indefinitely suspend all athletic and fine arts summer programs next week, Director of Athletics JJ Calderon announced on social media Wednesday.

"Out of an abundance of caution, Socorro ISD has made the proactive decision to suspend all athletic and fine arts summer programs for the week of July 6-10. We will provide updates regarding the potential return and fall programs as information becomes available," wrote the SISD athletic department in a statement.

Socorro ISD, which includes Americas, Eastlake, El Dorado, Montwood, Pebble Hills and Socorro, was off this week due to a previously scheduled summer break. Athletes returned to campuses for summer workouts on June 15.

Meanwhile, the city of El Paso has seen a recent surge in positive COVID-19 cases. There have been 794 new cases locally this week, along with an eight-day stretch of daily triple-digit cases reported. On Tuesday, Texas reported 6,975 confirmed cases of COVID-19, a new single-day record in Texas.

Last weekend, Ysleta Independent School District announced that they would suspend all summer activities after a coach at both Riverside and Hanks tested positive for the coronavirus. EPISD schools such as El Paso High, Chapin, Irvin and Austin, along with Canutillo, suspended summer workouts out of precautionary measures.
