El Paso has a latke-eating champion and his name is Nico Adjemian! Here’s Nico proudly posing with his trophy for eating the most latkes at the Jewish Food Festival at Mt. Sanai Temple over the weekend.

Latkes are potato pancakes, often topped with sour cream and apple sauce. However that combination sounds to you, take it from me: they are delicious. In the first ever latke eating contest in El Paso, Nico managed to put away ten…TEN… of the tasty ‘tater treats in five minutes.

But, now, a dark cloud of suspicion has fallen over the victory. Numerous members of the Buzz Adams Morning Show listening audience believe Nico must have been using “performance-enhancing drugs” to notch the win.

What could possibly be considered a P.E.D. in the world of competitive eating? At the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Championship in 2009, there was some suspicion that the winner, Joey Chestnut, was “juicing”. In a story on bleacherreport.com, they quote Chestnut as saying he’s never “knowingly taken performance enhancers”. He did acknowledge getting a B-12 injection before the competition. I can’t really tell if this story is meant to be taken seriously. For one thing, it’s under the category of “satire” on B.R. Also, the story says that Chestnut got his B-12 injection in, of course, “the buns”.

But in Nico’s case, it’s not steroids or testosterone that he’s being accused of taking. The insinuation seems to be that Adjemian was able to sock away so many latkes was because he enhanced his appetite by inhaling a substance called “tetrahydrocannabinol”. In other words, our listeners suspect Nico of smoking weed before the contest.

That’s a serious accusation and one that is, so far, unproven. For something like that to stick you would have to a.) catch him in the act, or b.) smell his car, his clothes or whatever is left of his hair.

For now, though, he seems to have gotten away with it.
