We are three weeks into the live racing at Sunland Park Racetrack. Although still months away from their signature Sunland Oaks and Derby races on March 24th, veteran horse racing broadcaster Tom Dawson is profiling different local and national fillies and mares. This week's show, discusses a few fillies that are making an early run at a possible spot in the Sunland Oaks. That includes Figure, who shined on the track in the sixth race of the day on January 13th.

On the track Saturday, Major Bites returns to action in the featured $85,000 Dona Ana County Handicap (9th race) at 440 yards. Major Bites is the most dominant older New Mexico-bred stakes Quarter Horse in training. Last year, the son of Jesse James Jr won 5 stakes races including the 2018 Dona Ana County and Mesilla Valley Speed Handicaps at Sunland Park. The 10-time winner is coming off a courageous third place finish to Jessies First Down in the Grade 1 $350,000 Championship at Sunland Park on Dec. 30. The speedball has earned over $703,000 and will tote high weight of 132 pounds. Esgar Ramirez pilots the 4-5 favorite.

Sunday’s $85,000 Albert Dominguez Memorial Handicap (8th race) is a terrific Thoroughbred feature at 1 and 1/16 miles.

$85,000 Johnie L. Jamison Stakes winner Thunder Dome is coming off a stellar 2018 campaign with 6 wins from 11 starts. The son of Dome is seeking his fourth win in a row and third straight stakes win for trainer Dallas Barton. Thunder Dome drove to a one length win in the Jamison Stakes at six and one-half furlongs over Go for a Stroll. The extremely versatile 8-5 morning line favorite is equally effective going a route distance. His bankroll is nearing the $530,000 plateau.

Defending champion Shining Source, Go for a Stroll, Streaks Bro and Hute help make up a very deep 9-horse field. Combined lifetime earnings in the Dominguez field is nearly $3 million.
