Will El Paso Get Drive Thru Vehicle Registration Renewals?
Texas recently got rid of the safety inspection requirements for vehicle registration renewals, now one city is doing away with the tax office visit. Could El Paso be next?
Texas, most of it anyway, did away with the safety inspection requirement to renew vehicle registrations a couple of years ago. That saves, (some), Texans that yearly trip to the mechanic but folks still have to go see the taxman.
Not in San Antonio though and, hopefully, El Paso will eventually do what they did.
San Antonians can now skip the long lines at the tax office when renewing their registrations and also take advantage of other perks at these new drive thru renewal stands.
Convenient, Time Saving Way To Renew Texas Registrations
Most Texans no longer need to get a safety inspection, (17 counties still require an emissions test), but owners still need to renew their registrations. Now, a quick stop at a drive thru renewal office makes the process quick 'n easy. (Be sure you have proper ID.)
“The actual registration renewal process is very simple. Many people load up their car with their kids, they’re on their phone, they’re watching YouTube, and they’re in line waiting to get their registration renewed,” Barnes said, explaining even a car or two ahead of you at the drive thru is more enjoyable from your car than a courthouse or the assessor-collector’s office with number ticket tags and fluorescent lighting. - mysanantonio.com
What's The Drive Thru Renewal Perk?
On top of not having to go wait in an office, owners who have let their registrations expire or who have been ticketed for an expired registration can also renew at the new drive thru offices. That's generally not allowed at other locations.

El Paso Still Requires Emissions Tests
El Paso is one of 17 Texas counties where emissions tests are still required but, (starting pretty soon), Bexar County ... where these drive thru stands are located ... will require them too. The way they handle this would work in El Paso too. They have an inspection stand right next door.
