Summer is, pretty much, here in El Paso and with the summer heat; there will be heavy rains and possible power outages in El Paso and across Texas.

The past few summers in El Paso and Teas have seen record breaking heat waves, the monsoon seasons have brought major flooding and power plants have failed among other things. There's also, (already), a high fire danger in Texas.

God willing, things will be fine but there is a chance for disasters this year and, this weekend, you can prepare for them at a discount. It's a tax free weekend.

Texas usually does tax free weekends around the start of the school season so families can get what they need a little cheaper. Retailers usually hold special "Tax Free Weekend" sales to that add to the savings.

This weekend, per Acting Comptroller Kelly Hancock, Texas is rolling back taxes on things Texans will need in the event of a disaster.

Tax Free Weekend For Emergency Supplies

"From hailstorms to hurricanes, Texans know the importance of being prepared when bad weather hits," Hancock said in a statement. "This sales tax holiday provides a great opportunity to stock up on supplies and save a little money while you’re at it." - fox7austin

What Emergency Items Are Tax Free?

Portable generators priced under $3,000 qualify, as do hurricane shutters and emergency ladders under $300, and smaller items, such as batteries, flashlights, first aid kits and fire extinguishers, all priced under $75. - fox7austin

Do Shipping Charges Count?

Yes. They will be added to the price of the item and could make that item ineligible for tax exempt status. Example: You order a fire extinguisher that is $70. That's under the $75 dollar limit but a $10 shipping charge brings it to $80. That's over the limit and it loses its tax free status.

There is no limit on the number of qualifying items you can purchase. Get 1 or 100, as long as the cost requirements are met. To learn more and see what is NOT tax free, click here.

Tax Free Emergency Supply Weekend

"Weekend" = 12:01am Saturday, 4/25 - midnight Monday, 4/27. (Early Saturday morning - early Tuesday morning.) Items that are shipped can arrive after Monday, as long as the order was processed/receipt dated before midnight Monday.

What If My (Qualifying) Item Gets Taxed Anyway?
