Wanna Use The HOV Lane In Texas Alone? Better Be 1 Bad “Mother”

Any Texas driver can use HOV lanes, as long as they have passengers. If you prefer to use it all by yourself, you better be a bad mother. Or a good one ... just ok ... whichever.

High Occupancy Vehicle, aka HOV, lanes in Texas can only be used by vehicles carrying 2 or more passengers. (Sorry, dogs don't count.) Unless you're one of the aforementioned "mothers" - they may soon have permission.

Texas wants to allow Mothers, as in female parents, to use HOV lanes whenever they want whether they have passengers or not.

You're not supposed to fly solo in Texas HOV lanes and the penalty for doing so can run you a couple of hundred bucks; even more if it's not your first one. Trucks with more than two axles, those weighing 5 tons + and vehicles towing trailers can't use them either.

Texas Allows Moms To Use HOV Lanes

In 2022, a Texas Mom was cited for being alone while using the HOV lane. She argued that her unborn child counted as a passenger and that led to Texas making it legal for single pregnant women to use the lane.

The Texas house just approved a bill that allows ANY woman who is pregnant, a mother, parent or legal guardian to use the HOV lanes. It now goes before the Texas Senate  Transportation Committee. If they pass it, 'yo Mama is good to go.

Best of all, not only does she enjoy the benefits of the HOV lanes, she gets to enjoy some much needed "alone" time.
