I’ve lived in El Paso my whole life, born, raised, and still proudly calling it home. I’ve traveled west plenty of times, to New Mexico, Arizona, even California. But when it comes to exploring my own state, I’ve somehow never made it farther east than Van Horn. Every time someone finds out I’ve never been to San Antonio, they say the same thing: “You’d love it, it’s basically El Paso with more to do!”

And honestly? I’m starting to think they might be right.

San Antonio Might Be the Bigger Version of El Paso- and That’s a Good Thing

The more I learn about San Antonio, its history, its people, its food, and its heart, the more I realize how much it reminds me of home. Both cities may be separated by hundreds of miles, but they share the same Texas soul.

If you’re from El Paso, you know what community feels like. It’s saying “mijo” to a stranger, running into your high-school friend at Walmart, or having an unspoken understanding that Chico’s Tacos tastes best at 1 a.m. after a show. El Paso isn’t just a city; it’s a giant neighborhood that happens to have mountains and a military base.

From what I’ve gathered, San Antonio has that same spirit, just turned up a notch. Locals there take pride in their neighborhoods the way we do in ours. They root for the Spurs the same way we root for the Chihuahuas. And like us, they know that no chain restaurant can compete with a hole-in-the-wall taquería run by someone’s abuelita.

Both cities also share a kind of easy warmth that’s hard to explain unless you’ve felt it. It’s that mix of Southern politeness and Borderland friendliness. Whether you’re in El Paso or San Antonio, someone will hold the door for you, ask how your family’s doing, and genuinely mean it.

Maybe San Antonio really is El Paso’s bigger, louder cousin- the one who throws a bigger party but still makes you feel right at home. Both cities prove that Texas pride comes in all sizes, from the desert to the river. And while I still haven’t made that trip east yet, I have a feeling that when I finally do, San Antonio will feel familiar, like running into an old friend you just haven’t met yet.
