Going to the mall is sometimes treated as an event. In El Paso we have our favorites to go to; whether it's Cielo Vista, Sunland Park, or the Outlet Shoppes. While those malls are big, they hail in comparison to The Galleria in Houston. You know it's huge when there's even a valet service...

How big is The Galleria?

Since it's built back in 1970, The Galleria sits at 2.4 million square feet, with over 400 stores/restaurants, 2 swimming pools, and even an ice skating rink. To give some perspective on just how big it is, that's about the size of Grand Central Station in New York & nearly as big as the US Capitol Building.

Or for those who live in El Paso,

The Galleria has nearly 3 times the amount of stores as Cielo Vista (with 140) & is twice as big (Cielo Vista is over 1.2 million square feet). And it's 2.5 times bigger than the Sunland Park Mall, which is the 2nd biggest mall in El Paso at 918,000 square feet.

Every year, nearly 30 million people visit each other, whether they're locals or people who just want to visit The Galleria to see how huge it is (or to try to shop at many places as possible).

You can see what I mean by seeing people's experiences at the mall.

So how big is it compared the other giant malls in the US

Despite being 2.4 million square feet, it only ranks at #7 in the entire United States. Compared to the top 3 malls in the United States,

  • #3 is the King of Prussia Mall in Pennsylvania at 2,793,000 square feet
  • #2 is The American Dream Mall in East Rutherford, New Jersey at 3 million square feet.
  • And #1 is still The Mall of America in Bloomington, Minnesota at 5.6 million square feet.

Of the top 20 biggest malls in America, the next closest Texas mall is the NorthPark Center in Dallas at 2 million square feet.

If you want to visit The Galleria for yourself, you can find it at 5085 Westheimer Rd in Houston.
