The university reported the news Thursday on its athletic website.

Knight, junior Blake Bell and sophomore Kendall Thompson entered preseason practice as contenders for the job to replace four-year starter Landry Jones.

Thompson fractured a foot on the first day of practice, removing him from the competition.

Bell played some last season for the Sooners, mostly in the run-oriented "Belldozer" package, while Knight has never thrown a collegiate pass. He redshirted last season after a standout career at Reagan High School in San Antonio.
