El Paso is a military town. We have Fort Bliss and Biggs Army Airfield in the midst of our city, and we have thousands of soldiers and their families living and working alongside us every day. We really appreciate our city's military connection and history, and we also strive to honor those veteran's who have passed.

More than 100 VA national cemeteries commemorate those who have served our nation in the military with the annual Wreaths Across America event. It is not only a way to remember those who have served in the military during the holiday season, but the event is also the way the National Cemetery Administration’s mission helps to spotlight he sharing of stories of America’s veterans through research, education, and community commemoration.

The Fort Bliss National Cemetery opened in 1939. It has seen more than 60,000 interments of veterans and eligible dependents. The cemetery is framed by the Franklin Mountains to the west and open to all members of the armed forces and veterans who have met minimum active duty service requirements.

This weekend, the Fort Bliss National Cemetery will host their Wreaths Across America event. They are asking the public to come out for the wreath laying ceremony. It is a lovely ceremony and very moving. We can never repay our veterans for their service, but we can attend ceremonies like this so that they and their families know how much we appreciate their service and sacrifice.
