New safety measures have gone into effect today at the El Pasoans Fighting Hunger Food Bank for recipients picking up food boxes.

Effective today, Friday, July 24, 2020, the El Pasoans Fighting Hunger Food Bank is requiring that all recipients picking up food boxes wear face masks and gloves. The new safety guidelines will also include that all recipients load their own food onto their vehicles and may consider bringing someone along to help.

Unfortunately due to the looming novel coronavirus, food banks have seen an urgent demand for food as families struggle across the nation on a daily basis.

Since mid-March, the El Pasoans Fighting Hunger Food Bank has distributed over 332,000 emergency food boxes to families in need in our area and continue to serve our community.

The new self-load pick-up structure is probably due to a lack of volunteers as the El Pasoans Fight Hunger Food Bank needs over 200 people across the 5 mega sites and 4 mobile pantries to continue offering the load in service. The food bank already utilizes the 80 Get Shift Done, 10 AmeriCorps, and 20+ from Workforce Solutions personnel and even had the National Guard available up until the end of last month. However, with no end to the pandemic and the ever-increasing need for food, more volunteers are needed daily.

So as of today, everyone will need to practice the following when picking up food boxes:

  • Wear a face covering (even while in the vehicle)
  • Wear vinyl gloves
  • Recipients will have to load their food boxes into their vehicle (If necessary, bring one person to help)
