El Paso is one step closer to having affiliated baseball for the first time in nearly a decade.  Following the 'If you build it they will come' model made popular in the 1989 film 'Field of Dreams,' the El Paso City Council voted 6-2 this afternoon to approve funding for a ballpark that will occupy the very site the votes were cast.

The council authorized the city manager to sign an agreement with Mountain Star Sports, LLC, to build the stadium.  The estimated cost of the stadium is $50 million dollars.  Mountain Star Sports is a group of private investors looking to secure a team for the stadium.

The council hopes the project will be funded in part by the hotel occupancy tax.  In November, voters will decide if they want to raise the current 15.5% rate by 2%.
