Two zip codes on the east side of town continue to lead the county in number of coronavirus cases, city data shows.

The zip code with the most COVID-19 positives as of May 17 is still 79938, with a total of 236 cumulative confirmed cases. From last Sunday, May 10, to this past Sunday, May 17, it has grown by forty-three. The neighboring 79936 ZIP code also grew by 43 new cases in the same week and now has a cumulative total of 215 since health officials began tracking the virus in early March.

It should be noted the city’s ZIP code case counts do not account for population differences across ZIP codes and therefore may be a bit misleading as far as where the highest infection rates in the county are concentrated.

While no other zip codes were in the triple digits on Mother’s Day, there are now three more one week later; 79912 in West El Paso, 79928, which encompasses Horizon City, and 79924 in North East. Socorro’s zip code, 79927, has grown by 23 and sits just under 100 with 98 total cases. 79907, which includes Ysleta del Sur, also has 98 cases and is one of the five zip codes that has seen the biggest one week jump.
