The Coronado Thunderbirds have been on a roll lately.  The momentum from their huge win over Americas last week carried over to last night where they beat Eastwood 35-20.

With the victory the T-Birds moved to 4-1 overall, and 2-0 in District 1-5A play.  After a surprising scoreless first quarter the T-Birds took a 7-0 lead when quarterback Mickey Courtney found Austin Edens for an 11 yard touchdown reception.  A few minutes later Courtney found wide receiver Branon Bogan for a 19 yard touchdown catch to put the T-Birds up 14-0.

Eastwood finally got on the board when wide receiver Richie Rodriguez scored on a 10 yard QB keeper.  Rodriguez filled in for quarterback Mark Torres who suffered a wrist injury in the previous week's game.  Rodriguez played well in relief of Torres by scoring 3 rushing touchdowns.

The game was close at the half as Coronado took a 14-7 lead into the locker-room.  The second half was a different story for T-birds who scored on every one of their possessions to go on to win the contest.  It was a drastic difference from last week's 38-35 victory over Americas when Coronado did not score in the second half.

Coronado benched starting quarterback Mickey Courtney and brought in back up Christian Monzon who performed rather efficiently in the second half going 7 for 7 with 94 yards and 2 TD's.  One major concern for Coronado is their defense, the past 2 weeks they have allowed both Americas and Eastwood to score frequently in the second half.

Next up for the T-Birds is their annual showdown with Franklin at the Sun Bowl on Thursday night.  Coronado will have their hands full attempting to stop Franklin's high profile offense.  As for Eastwood , they will host Socorro next Friday night.
