The deal to bring a Great Wolf Lodge resort to El Paso may be dead in the water (pun intended), but a hotel resort on the west side is still happening.

Montecillo, the mixed-use development off North Mesa where Top Golf and Alamo Drafthouse Cinema are located, announced construction on The Resort at Montecillo has started. Once fully complete, it will include a Marriot-brand hotel, event center for a variety of functions, day club with three large restaurants and covered patios, a fitness facility, and a water park. Renderings for the water park (posted below) show waterslides, a splash pad, lazy river, and pool with a bar and private lounge areas in the mix.

The water park resort will open first, most likely early 2021. The hotel, reportedly a Marriott Residence Inn, is sometime down the road. “It's still pending due to COVID 19. We are making sure it is properly designed,” was the explanation offered on the Montecillo Facebook.

But if you were thinking of hitting up the water park once it does open, you’ll have to move in there first. Only Montecillo apartment dwellers and homeowners will have access to it. Although once the hotel opens you can probably staycation there and use the facilities. The rest of us will only be allowed in “for special events.”

Plans to build The Resort at Montecillo were first announced in April of 2017 and constructions was to have begun by the end of that year. No word on what caused the years-long delay.

Remember when we only had 1 water park option in our area? Now, between this one and the 4 water parks the city will open summer 2021 there will almost certainly be one near you.
