USA Baseball will give youth players an opportunity to tryout in the El Paso area for the time ever. The combine will be held on Wednesday, May 16th from 4:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at Southwest University Park. Andy Powers, who operates the Texas Pitching Institute, is a coach on the Southwest Region of the US National Team Identification Series (NTIS). Powers just joined NTIS as a coach in January and he helped bring the tryout to El Paso for players ages 11 to 17.

The cost is $150 and includes a USA t-shirt. Players should bring the following equipment to Southwest University Park: baseball pants, belt & socks, baseball cleats, glove, batting helmet, baseball bat (BBCOR or Wood), protective cup, and catchers should bring their own catching gear. Workouts include a 60-yard run (30-yard for younger players), defensive skills assessment, batting practice, home to 1B times, pop times and arm velocities for catchers. Pitchers will perform a 20-25 pitch bullpen as well as pitchers fielding practice and other team oriented defensive drills. NO LIVE GAMES will occur during these identification tryouts.

In addition to El Paso, Southwest NTIS tryouts will also be held in Albuquerque, Las Vegas, Mesa, Tucson, and Phoenix. The best players from each tryout could have an opportunity to advance to stage two in August at the USA Baseball Training Complex in Cary, North Carolina.
