A Texas school board speech had gone viral on TikTok. It isn't the first time I've come across something like this, and it's certainly not a great representation of the state that I know and love. When people across the country watch trash like this, it really leaves a bad taste in their mouths.

Here in Texas, we aren't all angry, ignorant, red-faced, homophobic douchebags like this guy. And if you're not from around here, you certainly wouldn't want to visit, much less move here and put your kids in a Texas school, after watching this.

I'd like to apologize in advance to anyone who thinks of men like the one in this video when they think of Texas. This is not at all an accurate portrayal. However, there are certainly more hateful people around these parts than I'd like to admit.

I'm not sure what fills people with this type of rage, but my best guess is ignorance. I don't know what happened in this man's life to make him this way. If he's a parent, I can only feel sad for his children. I feel sad for any child raised to hate something or someone they don't understand. To hate another human being for being themselves is just a terrible shame.

Nobody is hurting this man. Nobody is telling him he doesn't belong. Nobody is rallying in his front yard or picketing with hateful messages to frighten him back into hiding his authentic self.

If only the tables were turned.

If you're on the fence about Texas, I don't blame you. We aren't often portrayed as the most welcoming place for every kind of person, and I'm sorry for that. But there are bright spots here if you can see past these kinds of people. There's a lot of love in our state too, and there are millions of people here who do find this kind of hatred unacceptable.

I'm one of them.
