Nigel Hawkins Commits to UTEP
Rodney Terry and the Miners are on a roll in terms of recruiting as news broke late Monday night that three-star shooting guard Nigel Hawkins has committed to the program. This is quite impressive that the Miners were able to land Hawkins considering that he had offers from Texas A&M, Virginia Tech, South Florida, Houston and Rice.
The fact that UTEP got Hawkins over some of these Power Five conference schools is a tremendous accomplishment for Coach Terry and his staff and fans should be excited for the future. The Cypress Falls senior won the 2016-2017 state title with the Eagles and was the state championship game MVP. The 6-2 175 pound guard will fit in perfectly with the Miners heavy guard play, and will get a ton of playing time right off the bat.
Hawkins is ranked as a top-25 guard in Texas, has tremendous quickness, a good shot and exceptional defensive skills too. The two-time first team all-state player noted about UTEP, "they run a lot of pick and rolls, and give their guards freedom to make plays, I'm excited to just be able to fulfill my goals, get better, work, and go win some championships."
Between the recent signing of Efe Odigie and now Hawkins committing, this could be the start of something special for UTEP basketball. Now, if they can only land Isaac Likekele then, it would be the cherry on top. So I now pose the question to Miner fans; how do you like Rodney Terry now?
