In a move that has already thrilled Locomotive FC fans, the club announced the signing of midfielder Sebastian Velasquez to a multi-year deal on Monday, pending league and federation approval.

The Locomotive signed Velasquez after spending more than a season and a half away from the club. Velasquez was a key piece in the 2019 inaugural season, and the midfielder helped the team reach the Western Conference Final. In that first season, he started 16 games for the club, registered five goals and chipped in with one assist.

“We are very happy to welcome back Sebastian into our group,” said Mark Lowry, Locomotive Head Coach and Technical Director. “There is no doubt Sebastian has great quality, we have seen it before, and we hope to see it again. The current group that we have in 2021 is a different team from what we had back in 2019. We are three years into building a culture on and off the field and that is the main reason why we are on this current unbeaten streak dating back 10 months. This is who we are as a team and an organization. We are always looking for ways to improve and we will never stand still. We move forward every day, and Sebastian is coming in at a good moment, with lots of football left in the season. He can make an impact and help us achieve our very lofty objectives.”

When he left the team after the 2019 season, Velasquez played for Miami FC where he made four goals in 10 appearances. That led the Columbian soccer player to a stint in the Israeli Premier League, featuring 12 games played and two goals scored for Bnei Sakhnin.

Velasquez, who is now 30, decided to come back to the Locomotive FC to help them continue their unbeaten streak (4-0-3).

The team will host rivals New Mexico United this Saturday, July 3, with a 7:30 p.m. start.
