Reel in the Fun Saturday at Free Kid Fish Derby at Ascarate Lake
The Ascarate Fishing Club is hosting another free fishing event for El Paso kids this Saturday, August 19, and a lack of fishing experience or fishing gear isn't a problem.
Not only is a fun way to spend the morning, it’s a great opportunity to get the kids out of the house for a few hours when daytime temperatures aren’t at peak levels.
What to Know If You Plan to Go
The Kid Fish Derby is a free fishing event for kids ages 3 – 16. Fishing Club members will happily teach kids fishing basics, so skill and know-how isn’t really a prerequisite to participate.
Fishing poles and bait will be provided for registered children to use during the event if the child doesn’t have his or her own.
Just take along a cap, sunscreen, bug spray, water, a camping chair or two, and your driver’s license to check out a pole and you're all set.
The county stocked the big lake recently, so chances are good your child will get a few nibbles and bites.
If not from catfish than maybe he or she will reel in a large mouth bass, sun perch, carp, or one of the other types of fish you'll generally find in the lake.
Kid’s Fish Derby is a catch-and-release event. Prizes will be awarded at the end of the tournament, and a free lunch will be served.
