Texas Rock Artists that Scored Big at the Grammys
There have been many artists from Texas who have won the Grammys. But how many were rock bands? Well we know that throughout the history of the rocks, many artists have been snubbed or just nominated for awards. But there have been a few that DID manage to win at the Grammy Awards.
Here are some Texas rock bands that have NOT won a Grammy
Before we talk about the winners, it's important to note on which bands did not win. While many rock & metal bands have never been nominated, here are some that HAVE but never won a Grammy:
- Pantera has been nominated 4 times
- ZZ Top - 3 times
- Nothing More - twice
- Spoon, Bowling For Soup & Power Trip, - just once
NOW... let's take a look at the winners.
Los Lonely Boys (San Angelo)
The pop rock group from San Angelo, Texas, Los Lonely Boys has a number of 5 nominations and only 1 win so far during the 47th Annual Grammy Awards: Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. The song that won that award was, no surprise, their biggest hit..."Heaven".
The Mars Volta (El Paso)
The progressive rock band from El Paso, Texas, The Mars Volta has 1 nomination & 1 win under their belt. Their win came during the 51st Annual Grammy Awards for the Best Hard Rock Performance category. The song that won was "Wax Simulacra". This wouldn't be the only time El Paso would win a Grammy, you can see a list here of past winners.
Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble (Dallas)
Arguably Stevie Ray Vaughan has the won Grammy wins on any rock & blues artists on this list; he has 6 as a solo artist & 4 along with Double Trouble. Needless to say, Stevie earned every award he got from the Grammys...
Eric Johnson (Austin)
The guitar virtuoso from Austin, Eric Johnson won his only Grammy Award during the 34th Grammy Awards for Best Rock Instrumental Performance. The song that won? Cliffs of Dover. Damn right it won...
Edgar Winter/Johnny Winter (Beaumont)
After being nominated a number of times, both Johnny (6) & Edgar Winter (3) have both won a Grammy each; Edgar won during the 65th Annual Grammy Awards for Best Contemporary Blues album for "Brother Johnny". Meanwhile Johnny won during the 57th Annual Grammys for his album "Step Back"
Of course those are the names in rock & blues, there are many names in country that have won for Texas:
- Asleep at the Wheel based out of Austin has currently won 8 Grammys
- The Chicks (Formerly the Dixie Chicks) from Dallas has won 12.
- And Willie Nelson from Abbott has also won 12.
Here's to hoping more rock & metal names will win the gold at the Grammys!
