Possum Kingdom Sounds Fake, But It’s Real and in Texas
Today I learned that Possum Kingdom is more than just a great song by The Toadies, it's a state park in Texas!
Yes, I know I'm late to the party, but in my defense, I've mentioned several times that although I am from Texas, I've never actually traveled anywhere outside El Paso- so I feel like I should get a pass on this. Actually this explains the song lyrics!
Yes, Possum Kingdom Is a Real Place in Texas
As it turns out, Possum Kingdom isn’t just a spooky rock song you’ve heard a thousand times on the radio- it’s an actual place in Texas, complete with cliffs, water views, and a full-on state park.
Possum Kingdom State Park sits in North Texas, near the Brazos River, and centers around Possum Kingdom Lake. It’s known for its dramatic limestone cliffs, clear water, camping, boating- so unsurprisingly, it’s also a popular spot for divers.
So Why Is It Called Possum Kingdom?
According to local history and longtime lore, the name Possum Kingdom goes back to the region’s early days, when the fur trade was a major part of life in the area. A fur trader from nearby Mineral Wells reportedly referred to the trappers there as “the boys of Possum Kingdom,” a nickname tied to a bend of the Brazos River where possums were plentiful.
The name stuck- not because it was official or polished, but because that’s sometimes how Texas names work.
When the dam was eventually built, it was named after a U.S. senator who supported the project. The lake, however, kept the already-popular regional nickname: Possum Kingdom. No rebrand. No focus group. Just Possum Kingdom.
The Song Made the Name Famous
If you’re like most people, your first introduction to Possum Kingdom wasn’t a map- it was the Toadies.
The Fort Worth-based band released “Possum Kingdom” in the mid-90s, and the song quickly took on a life of its own. Dark, creepy, unforgettable- and now permanently tied to the name.
While the band has said the song isn’t a literal retelling of the place, it absolutely turned Possum Kingdom into a pop-culture moment. For many listeners, like me, the song came first and the realization that it’s a real place came much later.
So if you also assumed Possum Kingdom was just a song title and not a real-life destination with cliffs, divers, and lake views, congratulations- you’re not alone.
And yes, I will absolutely be hearing that song differently now.
