The battle for the greatest Texas NFL team will for go on forever. As long as their are die-hard Dallas & Houston fans, it'll be between the Cowboys or the Texans or the Houston Oilers for the old school football fans (or even the Dallas Texans for REAL old school fans).

Back in the 90s, both teams were extremely competitive & one year, they would face off against each other in what would become the most attended NFL game in history. I wouldn’t be in Dallas, nor would it be in Houston… It would actually be in Mexico City.

This is story of the 1994 Texas Governors Cup between the Cowboys & the Oilers.

If you’re unfamiliar with what the governors cup is, it was the nickname given for the games between Dallas & Houston; It was also called the Battle of Texas. During a preseason game on August 13, 1994, both teams would face off in Mexico City at the Estadio Azteca football stadium.

A record breaking 112,246 fans watched what would become the single highest attended game in NFL history. In case you’re wondering who won that game, the Oilers shut out the Cowboys, 6-0. The two teams would meet up in the regular season for Week 2 at Dallas; the Cowboys would get their revenge & win 20-17.

The Cowboys play overseas again 10 years later, they would defeat the Jaguars in London's Wembley Stadium on November 9, 2014. The Cowboys won 31 to 17.

The Texans would also have a win overseas, in London, on November 3, 2019. They would also beat the Jaguars 26 to 3. I sense a bit of a pattern..

Personally, I think we should have another governors cup in the future. Whether it’s in Mexico, or London, doesn’t matter. I think we should have a match up, this time in the regular season. The Battle of Texas should continue whether it be overseas, or again in Mexico like this did 3 decades ago...
