You Won’t Believe These Crazy El Paso International Airport Facts

You can talk smack about El Paso's airport all you want, if you're a true traveler, you know it's actually one of the most user friendly airports in the world.

I've been in and out of airports all over the country and in other parts of the world and they're pretty much all the same. Lots of gates, stressed out people and long lines.

El Paso International Airport though is different. Sometimes there are lines but it's super easy to get around and doesn't require an hour or more to get from gate to gate.

Officially opened in 1928, El Paso International Airport has been operating for 95 years and has seen its share of firsts in terms of technology.

El Paso International Airport has always been at the forefront of the latest aviation technology. In 1968, El Paso was the first in the nation to have a 130 foot air traffic control tower. Once again in 2000, El Paso was the first Air Traffic Control Tower in the nation to operate with STARS radar system, a system that upgrades the air traffic control system and enhances the safety of the flying public. - elpasointernationalairport.com

In addition to that, El Paso International Airport is also where space shuttle astronauts train. Here are a few other airport fun facts:

• It moved to its present location in the 1930's.
• There are a total of 10 airports in the El Paso area.
• Its home to the United States Air Force T-38 maintenance facility.
• Its also where NASA's Super Guppy lives.

• Its original location was near Jobe Concrete across from Underwood Golf course.
• It is the busiest airport in west Texas and most of New Mexico.

• Of the top 10 biggest airports in Texas, El Paso International is number 7.
• It was the site of the first airline hijacking.
