I may end up being the last person with an actual subscription to the print version of the El Paso Times.

Even the Times keeps nudging me to switch to their digital edition via “reminders” and “prompts”.

Sometimes the print edition can be…illuminating.  For instance, local papers don’t really run “late” editions anymore. Nobody runs down and yells “HOLD THE PRESSES!!” because a huge story has broken.  Case in point…

Tuesday, May 24th at 10:32 El Paso time: an 18-year-old took an AR-15 to an elementary school. The body count is at 21. 19 of those were grade-school kids.

Not to worry, though. BOTH of the lead stories on May 25th were ALREADY about mass shootings.

$3 Million Grant for Shooting Trial

This was the lead story. Recently, the El Paso D.A., Yvonne Rosales, announced a 1.5 million dollar state grant to prosecute the suspect in the deadly Wal-mart shooting of 2019. In addition to a 1.5 million dollar Federal grant, that brings the total to the $3M in the headline.

The El Paso daily newspaper didn’t have enough lead time to get the Uvalde tragedy onto the front page. But, even if Uvalde had NEVER even happened, today’s paper would have been dominated by news of mass shootings.

These kinds of shootings are happening so regularly, that newspapers might have to start leaving part of the front page blank so they can fill in the latest outrage right before print time.
