After months of waiting and billboard conspiracies flying all over Twitter, the El Paso USL revealed its team name as the Locomotive FC.

MountainStar Sports Group, the owners of the El Paso USL organization, made the announcement Thursday afternoon at the Epic Railyard Event Center, to fit the occasion.

“I personally love it; favorite of the team finalists,” said head coach Mark Lowry. “It also fits what we want to do here. A locomotive is in motion, always moves forward. We want our team to move forward, no matter what’s in its way.”

Locomotive was chosen as the team’s name over the other four finalists: Estrellas, Tejanos, Stars and Lagartos.

“We want to thank El Pasoans for the energy and passion they brought to the name the team process. The tremendous community input and support we received is greatly appreciated,” said Andrew Forrest, General Manager of El Paso Locomotive.

The team colors will be baby blue, navy blue and yellow. The crest, which was designed by Brandiose, a design firm in San Diego, incorporates the train and the star on the Franklin Mountains together.

The 2019 team jersey will be revealed at a later date, per the organization.

Historically and for merchandising, Locomotive is a perfect fit. The Transportation Museum downtown showcases the El Paso & Southwestern Railroad No. 1, a 4-4-0 type steam locomotive.

“I’ve always dreamed of one day playing for my home city, and I’m so excited that this is happening,” said Omar Salgado, who will play forward for the team. “The league [USL] is surprisingly a lot faster than people may think. Futbol in the U.S. is becoming very competitive, like Mexico. Now, people are starting to grow up to compete with the best.”

The El Paso Locomotive will kick off its inaugural season in March of 2019. They will begin training camp on Jan. 9, 2019, followed by scrimmages, per Lowry.
