1910 — White Sox Park, later renamed Comiskey Park, opened in Chicago, as the White Sox lost to the St. Louis Browns, 2-0. (More info.)
1916 — Honus Wagner, 42, became the oldest major league player to hit an inside-the-park home run. (More info.)
1920 — Washington Senators’ pitcher Walter Johnson no-hit the Boston Red Sox, 1-0. (More info.)
1951 — Cleveland Indians’ pitcher Bob Feller, pitched his then MLB-record third career no-hitter, beating Detroit, 2-1. (More info.)
1961 — Golfer Mickey Wright won the U.S. Women’s Open at Baltusrol Golf Club in New Jersey. (More info.)
1977 — Virginia Wade of Britain beat Bette Stove of the Netherlands to win the women’s singles title at Wimbledon. Through 2011, it’s still the last time a Brit has won a singles title at the tournament. (More info.)
1980 — Steve Ovett of Britain set a world record in the mile in 3 minutes 48.8 seconds at Bislett Stadium in Oslo, Norway. (More info.)
