The Miners had six players score in double figures, as UTEP cruised to a season-opening 100-81 victory over UTPB in an empty Don Haskins Center on Wednesday night.
UTEP sophomore guard Kaden Archie, who joined the Miners midseason this year, will elect to transfer from the program as announced on Wednesday by Verbal Commits.
The UTEP men's basketball team (12-9, 3-5 C-USA) will return to the Haskins Center for the first time since their matchup against UTSA on Jan. 15, as they take on Middle Tennessee (5-16, 1-7 C-USA).
Going through a quick turnaround from losing to Old Dominion (50-48), who is the current No. 1 team in C-USA, the Miners will regroup and have their eyes set on Charlotte for Saturday's contest in the Don Haskins Center.
UTEP couldn't escape poor shooting for the second straight game, as Norfolk State shot 46 percent (11-for-24) from 3-point range and raced away with a 75-62 win in the opening round of the WestStar Bank Don Haskins Sun Bowl Invitational.
This year, with competition like Norfolk State, Wyoming and East Tennessee State, UTEP has their eyes set on bringing the Sun Bowl Invitational trophy home for the first time since 2014.
In front of 6,106 roaring fans, the Don Haskins Center was alive for a well-contested war between the two schools that featured eight lead changes, a surging comeback by the Miners and NMSU eventually breaking away with a 62-58 win.
