“Neighbor From Hell” has Neighbors on Edge

People living in a neighborhood on the west side of Albuquerque have been dealing with it for years.

One guy in the neighborhood has been terrorizing neighbors for years with his bizarre, often threatening behavior.

But, KOB-TV reports, the problem neighbor hasn’t done anything “bad enough” to go to jail over.

Not that neighbors haven’t tried. Albuquerque police have been called dozens of times over the years by residents who are afraid and feel unsafe because of the man’s antics.

To get an idea of what they’re putting up with, here’s a video:

The most recent incident in which police were called involved the man “carving a racial slur into a driveway” Sunday morning. The homeowner, Robert Witt, says the man “raised the sword” and began screaming before returning to his house.

Other neighbors say it’s a very good neighborhood…except for this one, scary guy. “I don’t think anybody feels unsafe to walk anywhere else in this neighborhood, except for this particular street”, another neighbor told KOB.

Other neighbors say they feel targeted because the man’s rants often include racial slurs.

“I’ve got to deal with him calling me a n******, I’m going to eliminate you n*****”," said Vincent Peele, who is African American.

“We’ve been putting up with it at four o’clock in the morning”, Peele said. “Yelling and screaming and all this demonic stuff that he wants to hurt people”.

So far…and perhaps surprisingly…no one has been hurt. But a lot of threats are made.

“It’s unsettling to hear that loud, angry voice saying, ‘I’m going to kill you’”, another neighbor said.

Albuquerque police ARE investigating this most recent incident with the sword. If the past is any indicator, though, there’s not much they can do. APD says that, before this incident, there’s only been one call about the man in the last four months.

They also say the man is not interested in any of the mental health services offered. This goes to the heart of the problem of gun violence in America.

Whenever there’s a mass shooting and it comes out that the perpetrator was known to have mental or behavioral problems, the chorus of “Why didn’t someone report him??” begins.

As this case in Albuquerque shows, sometimes the cop’s hands are tied. Until it’s too late.
