El Paso Locomotive FC fans will receive an extra treat in this altered and abbreviated 2020 USL Championship season in the form of an extra home match on Saturday night against regional rival New Mexico United. The match will take place at Southwest University Park and is scheduled to kickoff at 7:30pm MST.

The match will take place in El Paso, but it was originally scheduled to take place in Albuquerque. Due to state COVID-19 restrictions that match was moved to El Paso as announced by the Locomotive front office a couple of weeks ago.

This will be the 3rd time that these two clubs square off against each other since the USL restart in July with all 3 matches taking place at the home of the Locos. On July 15th the match ended in 2-2 draw. Nine days later the United defeated El Paso 2-1.

El Paso Locomotive FC has never defeated New Mexico United in the short history of both of these franchises.
That was a point that was echoed by NMU fans over social media after the July 24th match. If the result from tomorrow’s match is anything less than a win for the Locos it’s going to be a long Labor Day weekend for members of the 8th Notch, the Locos official supporters group, and any other diehard Locomotive fan.

While a defeat will not change things in the least in the standings, as El Paso has a tight hold on second place in Group C with 15 points after 9 matches and Colorado Springs is in 3rd place, 8 points back. That will most definitely not be the case for those that cheer on the Locomotive.

New Mexico fans will also probably bring up the fact that this match was supposed to be a home match for them and even still El Paso could not capitalize if another other result other than a win comes to fruition.

So grab the popcorn because it’s going to be an entertaining 90 minutes of soccer amongst rivals on Saturday night but the sound of the final whistle may signal on the beginning of the post match entertainment in the world of social media.
