R&B hitmaker and El Paso’s own Khalid was involved in a car accident forcing him to miss his gig over the weekend opening for Ed Sheeran.

Sheeran took the stage at the FedEx Field show in Maryland on Saturday (June 24) and shared the news about Khalid’s absence before filling in as his own opening act, People reported.

The “Eyes Closed” singer is on his first American tour in five years and tapped Khalid as his main support for the entire Mathematics Tour.

“So excited to join my bro Ed Sheeran on tour,” Khalid posted on social media last fall, adding, “This will be my first time performing on a stadium run.”

According to Sheeran, Khalid is recovering but wasn’t seriously hurt. There aren’t a whole lot of details behind the car accident, other than Sheeran’s revelation. Khalid’s social media hasn’t shared any news or updates or has even confirmed that Khalid was involved in a car accident.

But if Ed Sheeran said it happened then it happened. The singer/songwriter behind all those heartfelt love songs would never play with our emotions like that.

Born in Georgia, Khalid has lived all over the U.S. and six years in Germany. He ended up in El Paso after his mother was relocated to Fort Bliss, and spent his senior year at Americas High School.

He’s called El Paso home ever since.

Speaking to Apple Music's Zane Lowe in December 2021, Khalid had this to say about his adopted hometown:

[El Paso] is my home. They accept me for who I am. They embrace me, they show me the most love. So, I got to go back and let people know how inspired I am of this city.

I'm a military kid. If you think about it, I don't really have a home anywhere, but home is where you make it. And El Paso has embraced me as if I was one of their own.

His breakthrough album "American Teen" was released in March of 2017 and was certified 4x Platinum on the fifth anniversary of its release.

"Location," the lead single off "American Teen," was certified Diamond in the same week; only the 75th song in music history to do so.
