John Oliver Just Put El Paso Chihuahuas in the Spotlight
El Paso Chihuahuas, we’ve officially gone Hollywood- well, to HBO at least. In the latest episode of “Last Week Tonight,” John Oliver took a hilarious look at minor league baseball’s quirks, and guess who strutted into the spotlight? That’s right, our very own Chihuahuas, and yes, that glorious dog-faced jersey made an appearance.
You know which one I’m talking about; out of all the fun, promotional jersey’s the Chihuahuas have released, this one was named the best jersey in sports by USA Today when it debuted back in 2014. It's the dog-face jersey that literally just features a Chihuahua's face on it!
As part of a segment poking fun at the over-the-top promotions minor league baseball teams use to fill stadium seats, Oliver couldn’t resist calling out some of the most unforgettable examples- like the Rocket City Trash Pandas, or the bubble wrap night from the Lowell Spinners. And the part we all loved? El Paso’s bold fashion choice earned a well-deserved moment in the national spotlight. While the host got his laughs, it’s safe to say Chihuahuas fans were more flattered than roasted.
Especially once the actual team got a hold of the segment:
Oliver also makes a good point about the opposing team, saying:
How could they focus on the game when everywhere they turned they see a massive chest Chihuahua staring directly into their soul?!
I don't remember the outcome of the game when the Chihuahuas played with this jersey, but I do know that this jersey is now not only our favorite here in El Paso, but I'm sure it won over so many hearts across the nation!
So whether it’s for the baseball, the barking, or the bold fashion statements, the El Paso Chihuahuas clearly know how to make an impression- on and off the field. And hey, if a nationally televised shoutout from John Oliver doesn’t prove we’re big-league material, we don’t know what does.
See you at the ballpark, El Paso—dog-faced jerseys and all!
