Fall Is One of the Best Times for Bird Watching in El Paso
Lately, I've been wondering if I'm getting older or if the hobbies I once considered boring are suddenly starting to sound like a really good time.
Because tell me why bird watching is starting to sound kind of fun?!
I've heard that granny hobbies are having a moment, and I think I might officially be entering my granny hobby era. Give me a relaxing afternoon, some fresh air, and a pair of binoculars, and I might just be entertained for hours!
Now, I never really thought of El Paso as a place where people go bird watching. No offense to our local pigeons, but I genuinely thought those were pretty much our only options! Turns out, I have been seriously underestimating the Sun City's bird population.
Fall Is a Great Time for Bird Watching in El Paso
As it turns out, El Paso is actually a pretty interesting place for bird watching, especially during the fall!
Fall migration brings different species of birds through the Borderland, meaning there's a chance to spot birds you might not normally see throughout the year. And we're not just talking about pigeons! The El Paso area is home to roadrunners, hawks, quail, and plenty of other birds that I probably wouldn't even recognize if one landed right in front of me.
There are even local places known for bird watching, including Rio Bosque Wetlands Park and Keystone Heritage Park.
I had no idea there was this whole world of bird watching happening right here in El Paso, and now I'm wondering what else I've been missing!

El Paso Even Has Its Own Bird Watching Community
Not only can you go bird watching in El Paso, but there's an entire local community of people who share this hobby!
The El Paso/Trans-Pecos Audubon Society is a local chapter of the National Audubon Society dedicated to birds, wildlife, conservation, and the environment.
And they don't just talk about birds. They actually organize meetings and bird-watching field trips around the El Paso area!
They also have social media groups where bird lovers can connect and share their photos, which seems like a pretty cool place to start if you're curious about getting into the hobby.
There's even an entire guide highlighting the local birding community.
Meanwhile, I've been living in El Paso all this time thinking our bird population consisted of pigeons hanging out in parking lots!

Bird Watching Might Be My Next Favorite El Paso Hobby
Now, have I actually gone out with binoculars and spent an afternoon bird watching? Not yet!
But knowing that there's an entire community of people in El Paso who enjoy doing it makes me want to give it a try.
If this is what entering my granny hobby era looks like, I think I'm going to enjoy it.
Just don't be surprised if I start carrying binoculars around and pointing out birds to anyone willing to listen!
