What is the Arizona Delicacy?

I'm from the Bible Belt. Over on the east coast, generations of knowledge and tradition are passed down, creating some of the most unique and meaningful dishes.

From Georgia's homemade Barbeque to Florida's Key Lime Pies, most states have a delicacy that can only be found inside their borders.

So what's Arizona's?

Sonoran Hot Dogs

When I had first learned about Sonoran Hot Dogs, I wondered what could possibly set them apart from the regular wieners I'll order at fairs and baseball games. I decided to stay in the dark until I found my chance to try one, I didn't want the magic spoiled by reputation.

Finally, a coworker asked me if I'd ever consumed this strange dog, and when they'd put together that I had never had one, immediately took me to try one.

The Experience

I was taken to Guadalajara Street Tacos and Hot Dogs, located right off of State Road 92 and East Foothills Drive. I was ordered for, sat, and prepared to see what all the fuss was about.

There wasn't enough fuss.

Out came our dogs, covered in takeout boxes so I could not make out what made this meal special right from the get go. Eventually, the roof of the container raised, showing me my prize. It was beautiful.

Wrapped in bacon, swaddled in a Bolillo bun, and smothered with pinto beans, tomatoes, onions, mayonnaise, mustard, and more, I had never tasted something like it. Once the moment of pure shock passed me, I fell in love. These dogs are truly the Arizonan delicacy, and should be celebrated accordingly.
