For Aaron Dumas, one year in Albuquerque was enough for him. The former Americas High School star who set the single-season El Paso rushing touchdown record in 2019, decided to leave the University of New Mexico after just one season and put his name into the Division 1 Transfer Portal.

As a true freshman, Dumas was the Lobos leading rusher this season, averaging 4.8 yards per carry in 11 games with UNM. His longest run from scrimmage was for 63 yards and he added a pair of touchdowns. Strangely enough, he did not catch one single pass all season.

Steve Virgen, who covers the team for the Albuquerque Journal, tweeted out earlier today that New Mexico recruited some talented running backs for 2022 and also that Nate Jones would return next season after he entered the portal last summer but returned to the Lobos and spent most of 2021 on the scout team.

Although Miners fans could be hoping for a homecoming, Dumas should get plenty of looks from Power 5 schools after his solid freshman season at New Mexico.

UTEP also has a crowded backfield with Ronald Awatt, Deion Hankins, and Willie Eldridge returning for the 2022 season. Dumas would have a tough time getting any carries if he returned to El Paso.
