El Paso Can Finally Enjoy Its First Non-Profit Grocery Store

These are tough financial times for everywhere in the world; people are trying to do everything they can to help out each other, out of the goodness of their hearts. Today the first nonprofit grocery store opened up in El Paso.

Desert Spoon Food Hub has been around since 2015 founded by Adriana Clowe, Vanessa Brady and Patsy Stallworth. All with the goal of supporting small local farmers who grow the food for the citizens of Paso Del Norte. They obtained a grant back in April 2020 to build a distribution warehouse in El Paso but unfortunately the COVID-19 pandemic really slowed their progress on helping the people of El Paso & Las Cruces have affordable & healthy food.

But there was better news last year, when the U.S. Department Agriculture Local Food Promotion Program gave them a grant to build a more food secure region, providing the help local farmers needed to grow food. With additional funding from the El Paso County Health Food Financing Initiative and the American Heart Association, things were starting to become a realty.

In 2022, Desert Spoon finally opened their door to the public on Thursday (March 24th) at 1pm at 1714 Yandell Dr. Huge names like Commissioner David Stout, Cesar Blanco & Congresswoman Veronica Escobar were there at the opening ceremony.

As of right now, the 1714 Yandell location will only be open Saturdays from 9am to noon. It's a step in the right direction however, & these are HUGE efforts to helping families in El Paso, Las Cruces and surrounding areas to be able to afford healthy food, especially during these hard economic times.
