Professional baseball is finally returning to the Sun City. Major League Baseball released the 2021 schedules for all Minor Leagues this morning, and the Chihuahuas will play a 142-game schedule. It will also be unbalanced, since El Paso will play 70 games at Southwest University Park and another 72 games on the road. The baseball season is scheduled to begin on April 8th.

"Seeing this schedule renews the excitement for everyone from fans to team members to front office and game day staff that baseball and the Chihuahuas will be back at Southwest University Park in 2021," said MountainStar Sports Group Senior Vice President and Chihuahuas General Manager Brad Taylor in the official team release. "All of us are thrilled to get back to what we love!"

The 2021 season was created with COVID in mind, and each Triple-A West team will play six game series that begin every Thursday and will end the following Tuesday. Wednesday will be a travel day for every team, and Triple-A West is the only Minor League to choose a Wednesday off day (every other league picked Monday). The reason for Wednesday is because Triple-A West will mostly travel by commercial flight and Wednesday is a low fare day. Also, teams did not want to give up a Monday home gate, since attendance is usually stronger that day than mid-week. In all, the Chihuahuas will play a total of 23 six-game series, with one four-game series in July at the MLB All Star Break. Every team will be off for three days during the All Star Break, and then they return to action on Thursday, July 15th. The team will play on Memorial Day (May 31), Father’s Day (June 20), Labor Day (September 6) and Mexico’s Independence Day (September 16).

El Paso will get very comfortable with the other four teams in their East Division: Round Rock (Texas Rangers), Sugar Land (Houston Astros), Oklahoma City (LA Dodgers), and Albuquerque (Colorado Rockies). They will play Albuquerque a total of five times, while Oklahoma City, Round Rock, and Sugar Land will meet the Chihuahuas four times each in 2021. The rest of the schedule will be spread out among the five teams in the West Division.

The Chihuahuas will spend their first season in the new Triple-A West, the league created by MLB as part of their restructuring plan. More than 40 teams were eliminated from affiliated ball and now just 120 teams remain. Of those, 30 are in Triple-A, divided up by East and West Leagues. The Chihuahuas are in the East Division of Triple-A West. We still do not know if there we be a postseason in 2021. Confused? You should be. Welcome to Minor League Baseball, according to MLB.

"We are excited to unveil this new model, which not only provides a pipeline to the Majors, but continues the Minor Leagues’ tradition of entertaining millions of families in hundreds of communities," Commissioner of Baseball Robert D. Manfred, Jr. said in the release. "In modernizing our Minor League system, we prioritized the qualities that make the Minor Leagues such an integral part of our game while strengthening how we develop professional athletes on and off the field. We look forward to demonstrating the best of our game throughout local communities, supporting all those who are working hard to grow the sport, and sharing unrivaled technology and resources with minor league teams and players."
