It was the perfect night for a championship fight at the Sun Bowl.  The winds were relatively calm, and the extreme heat of the day had passed.  The crowd of 13,467 walked away quite pleased as Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. defeated Andy Lee with a 7th round TKO to retain his WBC Middleweight championship.

El Paso is no stranger when it comes to hosting huge boxing matches.  Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. takes on Andy Lee later on this evening for the WBC middleweight championship, adding their names to the many other famous fighters who have laced up their gloves here.

Reflecting some of boxing's brightest lights, El Paso's bling sparkled that much brighter Wednesday. The Plaza Theater's organ belted out old time movie music as the grand old theater itself provided an artistic backdrop to what is usually a testosterone-drenched affair -- a boxing press conference. It was an interesting departure from the sterile conference rooms where these events are usually held.

In what was one of the worst decisions in boxing history, Timothy Bradley defeated Manny Pacquiao last night in Las Vegas.  Two of the three judges gave Bradley the narrow victory, one that should have an asterisk by it when historians look back at the bout.

UT System Chancellor Dr. Francisco Cigarroa did not get where he is in life by being naive or foolish.  Facing immense pressure from local and state officials after Tuesday's decision, Cigarroa was left with little choice but to reverse his original stance...

In what was the most disappointing news in El Paso in quite some time, the UT System cancelled the Julio Cesar Chavez vs. Andy Lee fight at the Sun Bowl.

Take a look at just about every product you purchase. Chances are you will see a huge warning label telling you about the risk associated with that product. After a famous lawsuit some twenty years ago, steaming hot cups of coffee from McDonald's now come with a warning telling you the contents may be hot and can burn you.

It was a bittersweet day for me today at the Sun Bowl.  I got to interview the boxer that shares my name, but shortly after I learned that the June 16th fight will not take place in El Paso. An hour before the press conference, fight promoters learned that the University of Texas Officials deemed the Sun Bowl and the UTEP campus as 'not the appropriate venue for the event...

Earlier this afternoon, Hall of Fame boxing promoter Bob Arum announced via conference call that World Middleweight Champ Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. would headline a big night of boxing at the Sun Bowl on June 16th.
