Local Sports Teams & Personalities Speak Out For George Floyd

As social media accounts have joined the movement to "Black Out Tuesday" across social media sites, local sports organizations, coaches and players have voiced their support for justice amid the killing of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer.

Townsquare Media and 600 ESPN El Paso stands in solidarity with people of color in the fight against racial injustice and discrimination of any kind.

UTEP men's basketball head coach Rodney Terry voiced his opinions on the weekend's protests across the country and encouraged everyone to "check ourselves, show some courage and make the right personal decisions to help stop this legacy of de-humanizing other Americans." Fellow Miners like guard Souley Boum posted on social media in support of the #BlackOutTuesday action.

In fact, all of the UTEP athletic affiliated social media accounts turned their attention toward #BlackOutTuesday through various posts and updates across multiple social media platforms.

Locomotive FC head coach Mark Lowry referenced a quote by Simon Sinek about leadership and tweeted "having a position of authority simply means we are responsible for the well-being, development and care of everyone within our scope..."

Both the El Paso Chihuahuas and Locomotive FC advocated for the #BlackOutTuesday movement with blacked out posts on social media. Others like the El Paso Rhinos hockey team and high school coaches also joined in on social media to voice their support.

The New Mexico State men's basketball squad joined Las Cruces residents in a peaceful vigil in memory of George Floyd. Players like Jabari Rice and Tennessee Owens used the opportunity to voice their opinions on the protest as well.
