If you want to take a vacation and escape the Texas heat this summer, you might want to take this particular river off your list.

Guadalupe River State Park, located near San Antonio, is going through some changes and it may be a little more than you can handle. Swimming is still allowed in the river but officials don't recommend it.

Recent rainfalls have really jacked up the water levels and made the current dangerous.

KXAN quoted a post on the Guadalupe River State Park Facebook warning that while, on the surface, the water may seem calm - "strong currents, swift flows, and fluctuating water levels are currently making the river unsafe for recreational activities".

In the last few days, water levels have receded but each rain storm brings the risk of the situation repeating itself. The rain falls upstream so it takes about a week for all that "new" water and the stronger currents it creates to get to the park area.

Where Else Can You Cool Off In Texas?

If you don't feel like dealing with the Guadalupe Rivers temper, Texas is loaded with other swimmin' holes. There aren't many natural swimming areas around El Paso, the Rio doesn't always have water in it and swimming is prohibited in Ascarate Lake.

If you're up for a road trip though, Texas is loaded with lakes. One of them, Lake Amistad, actually straddled the US - Mexico border so be careful how far you swim across it. It's also the deepest lake in Texas.

Believe it or not, of the approximately 7,000 lone star state lakes, only 1 is natural. New Mexico has some nice lakes nearby but watch out for all the snakes at these.

By the way, if you have your own pool here in El Paso, DON'T rent it out.
