Texas Has the Highest Rate of Pediatric Vehicular Deaths
Heat related deaths are tragic, and when it involves a child in car, it's even more tragic- and in Texas- the actual stats are alarming.
NoHeatStroke.org provided a detailed breakdown of pediatric vehicular heatstroke deaths in the United States from 1998 to 2023, categorized by state. In it, it found that Texas has the highest number of deaths at 142!
The data includes per capita rates, showing how the states rank in terms of deaths per million children aged 14 years and younger. It's not surprise that the heat is intense in Texas- but what is surprising is the amount that those deaths are due to children left in a hot car.
NoHeatStroke.org broke down the exact ages and temperatures that children endured; some range from three months to three years old. And some of the temperatures are as low as 94 degrees to as high as 105 degrees.
Other states that followed high in ranking are, not surprising, also in the south. Florida came in second with 110. States like Louisiana and Arizona also have some of the highest per capita death rates.
Of course, because Texas is such a big state and has a higher population, higher populations are going to have higher rates of just about everything, not just heat deaths, but it's still kind of shocking to see the numbers.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, about 40 children a year die from heatstroke, either because they were left or became trapped in a car. That's about one child every 10 days killed in a hot car. A majority of them happen because someone forgets a child in the backseat. Check out the tips they have to prevent hot car deaths here.
