South Texas has the #1 city in the United States of America for first time home buyers and home buyers in El Paso, Texas also have it pretty good.

SmartAsset just released its 2025 roundup list of the best housing markets in the USA   and a small Texas city on the border snagged the #1 spot.

Based on many factors, including overall home prices and the areas median income, McAllen has been named the best city in the US for first time home buyers to take that big step.

SmartAsset ranked the largest 180 metros across the country for their "best markets for first time home buyers" list and Texas got 3 spots in the top 15, (El Paso, Texas was one of them), 2 Texas cities made the top 10 and McAllen was #1.

Factors that SmartAsset took into account included home affordability, median family income, supply of and demand for homes, home-price growth projections and the number of peeps in their 20s and 30s.

Where Did El Paso Place?

El Paso, Texas made the top 20, coming in at #15. The number 3 spot went to Killeen, Texas and, as noted above, McAllen was numero uno. Things that helped McAllen were "positive projected home-price growth", median sale price of $204,499 and a "patient" market. That means buyers can take their time making their decision(s).
