New Mexico Ranked as One of the Worst States to Raise A Family
WalletHub has just come out with their list of the Best and Worst States to Raise a Family in 2025 and bad news for our friends in New Mexico who ranked really low!
When it comes to raising a family, there are a lot of questions that you have before you take the plunge like, where will my family get a good education or good healthcare?
WalletHub compared all 50 states on 50 key indicators of family-friendliness in the categories of family fun, health and safety, education and childcare, affordability, and socioeconomics. States were rated on factors ranging from median annual family income to school quality to crime rate.
All the top 10 states are up north, Massachusetts ranked in at number one followed by Minnesota, North Dakota, Nebraska and New Hampshire all in the top five.
And coming in dead last? The land of Enchantment!
New Mexico ranked as the worst state to raise a family according to WalletHub, it’s dead last for education and child care and ranks near the bottom in all categories.
Anyone with kids will tell you it’s not cheap to raise a family, but some places are definitely more affordable than others, New Mexico came in last for median family income, combined with the high cost of child care costs, where New Mexico ranked second for highest child care cost, it is a bit more challenging to raise a family in New Mexico.
However, I see many different families thriving in the Land of Enchantment, so while it may be a bit more challenging for families, there certainly are other opportunities for families to thrive in New Mexico.
