The 'mosca's are about to cast their annual pestilence upon El Paso ... here are a few easy, and totally natural, mosquito repellant ideas.

These little bastards come at us every year from, roughly, April - September but the "season" can start as early as February and run as late as through October. We enjoy a warm climate here in the 915 and so do these guys so "mosca season" runs long.

It's really going to peak when the monsoon season hits and El Paso gets most of our yearly rainfall. 'Skeeters LUV that ... August is usually best for rain, worst for annoying disease carriers.

As bad as they can get all over the 915, peeps near the river, levees or Ascarate Lake really feel the pain. (Literally.) Here are a couple of ideas to keep them away that are completely natural so you don't have to worry about yourself, the kids or your pets being affected.

What Are Some Natural Mosquito Repellants?

We'll start with coffee. Yes, coffee ... simply set some coffee grounds in bowls around the area you're in. For best results, burn the coffee grounds as you would incense. For a triple whammy, add bay leaves to the "burn". Read more, natural, ideas here.

What Other Plants Do Mosquitoes Hate?

To help repel these evil little blood suckers, you can add several plants to your area. The ones they really hate include lavender, basil, peppermint and rosemary. The bonus here is lavender smells good while basil, peppermint and rosemary taste good.

What Else Can I Do To Prevent Mosquitoes?

Some simple ideas to make your home/yard less attractive to these minions from hell include removing any standing water. Call 311 to report mosquito breeding or standing water.

Can Mosquitoes Transmit dangerous diseases to humans?

YES. They've been called the "world's deadliest animal". Be careful when you're outdoors and take the following precautions:

  • Avoid being out between dusk and dawn whenever possible.
  • Use mosquito repellant, bonus points if it contains DEET.
  • Wear light colored clothing.
  • Close your windows.
  • Run fans - These a**holes don't fly well against the breeze.

Keep Those Texas Mosquitoes Away By Wearing One Of These 4 Colors

According to experts, the lighter the color the less likely you are to attract mosquitoes. However, your blood type, sweat, and CO2 (carbon dioxide) output will come into play too.
