
It’s Winter But El Paso Needs To Keep Chugging That Water
Proper hydration in a city as hot as El Paso is super important, no matter the season. In fact, during winter, it can be even more important so, drink up folks.
Not all people, in fact way too few people in the Borderland, drink enough water in the warm spring and summer months. In the winter, hydration tends to be even less of a concern for most but it's just as important in winter, if not moreso.
Everyone thinks about water in the Borderland during summer because it's hot AF and we're all sweating so much, we can dehydrate just crossing the street. It's on our minds because it has to be.
Why Do People Need More Water In Winter?
It's not as hot out but we do things that can still rob your body of moisture according to Dr. Jordan Maxwell who says winter is when dehydration can really sneak up on you.
Maxwell said cold winter air holds less moisture, which dries out the skin and respiratory system. Indoor heating can make the problem worse. “When people are indoors with their heater on, that also decreases the humidity in their homes,” Maxwell said. - KVIA
Drier air causes skin to lose more water as it evaporates quicker. Dehydration is sneaky and folks often don't notice its onset until it's too late.
How Can You Spot Dehydration?
The symptoms are pretty subtle so you need to be aware of them and absolutely DO NOT ignore them. Dehydration can be fatal. The first sign of it is, duh, thirst. Followed by:
- Dry Mouth
- Dark Urine/Less Urination
- Dry Skin
- Lower Blood Pressure
- Muscle Cramps
- Constipation
- Fatigue
- Headache

How Do You Treat Dehydration?
If the symptoms are mild, drink some water ... sip, don't gulp ... and up your sodium intake. If that doesn't do the trick, try an electrolyte heavy drink like Gatorade, Powerade, Pedialyte, etc.
If symptoms persist or get worse, SEEK MEDICAL HELP.
