El Paso Electric Joins Major Grid Southwest Power Pool
For years El Paso Electric has been serving the El Paso area & neighboring Las Cruces, New Mexico. It's served thousands of customers in just those regions since 1901. However El Paso Electric will be seeing a massive change in the future as it will no longer be its own separate entity.
El Paso Electric will now be part of the Southwest Power Pool
If you're not familiar with the Southwest Power Pool, they help control the amount of electricity sent to 14 states including Oklahoma, Kansas, Arkansas, Nebraska, both North & South Dakota and mainly North Texas [most of the state's power is controlled by the Electric Reliability Council of Texas].
What does this change mean for El Paso Electric?
Because El Paso Electric will be part of the Southwest Power Pool, that means they will be able to use the shared resources proved by the SPP. This could result in more efficient power flows, lower operational costs (and better savings for EP Electric customers) & clean energy for all of EP Electric's customers.

When will El Paso Electric be joining the Southwest Power Pool?
This all sounds like really positive news but now here's the slight downside. These changes won't be made anytime soon. According to El Paso Electric, this change won't be made until 2028. So...yeah it'll be a few years before we see these massive changes be made but it is something to look forward to. You can find more updates on El Paso Electric's website here.
This isn't the only El Paso Electric story to come out this week; they might be charging you more on your power bill. You can read that story here.
