Arizona is Home to the Largest Aircraft Graveyard in the World
After a plane has past its usefulness, usually it gets taken away to be torn part & destroyed. Many planes have suffered this fate throughout history. Unless you go to one particular location in Arizona; one place that has been turned into a graveyard for old planes. One spot in Tucson has become nicknamed the Boneyard & it is the world's largest aircraft graveyard.
What is the biggest aircraft graveyard in the world?
Although people like to call it "The Boneyard", its real name is the Davis-Monthan Air Force Base. Over 3,300 acres of land holds officially 3,280 aircraft and 13 aerospace vehicles used formerly by the US Army, the Air Force, Coast Guard, Navy, Marine Corps & NASA. It officially obtained the record in 2010 by the World Record Academy. Some of the other biggest aircraft graveyards include the Pinal Airpark in Tucson, the Roswell International Air Center in New Mexico & the graveyard in Victorville, California.
Before many people were able to go visit the Boneyard & get tours around the base in buses so they can see the aircraft up close. So if you really want to get an idea on just how massive the graveyard is, take a look at some of the videos posted by visitors from years ago.
Can you visit Davis-Monthan Air Force Base today?
Sadly...no. I mentioned early that people were able to get tours on the base. As of 2023, the Davis-Monthan Air Force Base does not allow visits anymore, and there are no plans to restart again soon. Understandable since it IS an active military base.
But all is not lost. People ARE able to visit the Pima Air & Space Museum nearby, so people are still able to enjoy seeing historic aircrafts.
While it is a shame that we can't visit the Boneyard anymore, what is NOT a shame is that it holds a record that the US has proudly held for over a decade. And we have the folks at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, our proud military heroes & airplane lovers to thank for it.
