ALERT: Intrusive Fish Discovered For The First Time In Texas Waters
There was a new fish found in Texas waters. The only issue that it isn't good for our environment. Here's what is known at the time of writing.
Problematic Fish Found In Leander, Texas River
As revealed by a post on social media from Texas Parks & Wildlife, the fish has been revealed to be a hybrid Peacock Cichlid. It was discovered in the South Fork San Gabriel River:
The page also revealed that is believed to be a fish released from an aquarium tank. With this discovery, this type of fish has been found in Texas waters for the first time. But why is this harmful to the Lone Star State?
Why This Fish Being Found In Texas Waters Is An Issue
According to Chron, while cichlids are regularly found in Lone Star State waters, this one isn't. In fact, with it being the first time found, there's a chance it could disrupt the natural flow of the Texas animal kingdom. There's many ways it could potentially cause issues.
Chron revealed that fish that aren't normal to area could bring many things that aren't good for nature. Things such as disease, or the fish itself hunting other fish as a predator. Harm to the vegetation or reefs in the state is possible as well.
To avoid this happening in the future, Texans should avoid simply taking the fish to any local body of water to release them. The Fort Worth Star-Telegram provided various ways one can take care of their fish the proper way. Be smart and safe Texas!
